Josef Vitus Becher, a well-known spice and colonial goods merchant, had a passion for producing alcoholic beverages. In 1794, he rented a wine distillery and began experimenting with liqueurs. In 1805, Dr. Frobig from England came to Karlovy Vary, who often visited Josef and they discussed herbs and their healing properties. When Dr. Drobig left, he left Josef a recipe for a revolutionary liqueur.
After two years of testing, in 1807, Josef began selling the medicinal liqueur "English Bitter" for stomach issues. It became very popular not only at home but also abroad.
In 1838, Ján Bechcer, Josef's son, took over the business and the distillery "U troch škovránkov." Ján is considered the founder of Becherovka. Until 1945, the company was owned by the family. After World War II, production was nationalized. Today, the business is privatized and belongs to Pernod Ricard. The production recipe of 32 herbs remains a secret to this day, known only to 2 people in the world.
