Bowmore

In 1766, David Simpson bought the island of Islay and founded the Bowmore distillery there, the first mention of which is from 1779. Bowmore is the first licensed distillery on the island of Islay and a pioneer in the world of Scotch whisky. Since 1779, it has stood on the shores of Lochindaal, a sea lake that flows into the wild Atlantic Ocean.

And that is not the only championship. Bowmore boasts the oldest whiskey aging warehouse in the world. It is titled No. 1 Vaults. and the whiskey has been resting in this warehouse for over 240 years! The distillery still operates in traditional ways. The whiskey is still made by hand, with time invested in each step. This care and attention to detail creates a unique and timeless Bowmore style, characterized by unsurpassed single malt whiskies. These remain inimitable and age like no other on the Isle of Islay.

The history of the name Bowmore is shrouded in mystery. Some historians believe that the name Bowmore is derived from a small black cliff just beyond Lochindaal, while others refer to the Norse word for sunken rock, bogha mor. Whatever the truth, the strong connection of nature, surroundings and heritage is clear.
