The Glenrothes

Glenrothes Distillery is quite important and its ten distilleries have a capacity of more than 5.6 million liters per year. The distillery currently uses 90% of its total capacity and stores its single malt whiskey in sixteen warehouses that are part of it. Nevertheless, Glenrothes retains a relatively handicraft character and avoids the production of traditional species. This may be due to current licensees, Berry Brothers and Rudd, the famous London wine merchant. Glenrothes single malt whiskeys are available in a wide range of vintages.

The bond with Berry Bros. is very strong, as they sold Cutty Sark in the 1920s, the best-selling blended Scotch in America, where Glenrothes whiskey is the main ingredient. Glenrothes Distillery was founded in 1878 by James Stuart and Co. The group licensed the Macallan distillery about a decade ago. James Stuart, the group's leader, focused all his efforts on Macallan and the three remaining members of the syndicate; William Grant, Robert Dick and John Cruickshank founded William Grant and Co. Production began in 1879.

In 1887, William Grant and Co. merged with Islay Distillery Co. to form the Highland Distillers Company. It included Glenrothes Distillery and Northern eachleach in Bunnahabhain. With the addition of other distilleries in 1898, the capacity of the distillery was further increased. It was a year before a disturbing fire engulfed the distillery. In 1922, Glenrothes experienced another catastrophic fire, destroying the warehouse and setting aside 2,500 barrels of Scotch. During the second half of the 20th century, the Glenrothes distillery gradually grew, and in 1989 the last two distilleries were completed. The official series is good and several separate products have been launched.
