Vodka Smirnoff makes fun of Trump. She shot or hit the bull's-eye
Perhaps it is no surprise to anyone that not all Americans are happy with their new president. And it's not just residents, but even big corporations are not afraid to voice their opinion. Smirnoff vodka has humorously taken this up recently.
In various places in America, the latest residents can admire such billboards with the inscription:
"Made in America. But we'll be happy to talk to you under oath about our ties to Russia, too."
The joke of this new campaign is that it pokes fun at President Trump's statements. In fact, former FBI Director James Comey suggested during his questioning before the US Senate that President Trump removed him from his post because he was investigating Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, which Trump emerged as the winner.
Well, and President Trump has said that he's willing to talk about his contacts with Russia, but only under oath. Well, it didn't take long for Vodka Smirnoff to catch on. The funny thing is, the vodka itself was created in Moscow.
American vodka with Russian roots
Smirnoff Vodka is one of the biggest pioneers of vodka sales in the US. The history of Smirnoff vodka began in Moscow in 1864. That's when Pyotr Smirnov founded a vodka distillery there and began distributing his vodka under the P.A. brand . Smirnov. The vodka began to dominate the Russian market rather quickly and was reportedly the Tsar's favorite. Annually, Pyotr Smirnov produced up to 4 million bottles of his vodka.
During the October Revolution in 1917, the Smirnov family was forced to leave Russia. They settled in what is now Ukraine, where Pyotr's son Vladimir started selling vodka again, this time under the temporary name Smirnoff vodka. However, it did not fare nearly as well as it had in Russia.
In the 1930s, however, Vladimir met Rudolph Kunett, a Russian émigré who was a successful businessman in New York. It was he who was credited with bringing the Russian vodka Smirnoff to the American market. Although it didn't do so well in his hands, it wasn't long before another company reached for the Smirnoff brand and made it a real favourite with Americans.
Whatever your opinion of President Trump, a little wit and satire is necessary for life. What do you think, did Smirnoff Vodka miss the mark or did it instead succeed with this fad?
