Ardnahoe Bholsa is the second official whisky from the new distillery Ardnahoe on the Isle of Islay, Scotland. It is bottled at cask strength 50% ABV, matured primarily in Oloroso sherry casks, with no added coloring and no chill filtration.
Bholsa is inspired by the Bholsa caves located near the distillery.
The nose reveals notes of red fruits (plums, red berries, cherries), toasted nuts, orange peel, and a gentle smoke/peat typical of Islay whisky. The base consists of sweet aromas of sweet malt, vanilla, and Oloroso sherry.
The palate is full and well-structured – fruits like raisins and plums, dark fruity notes from sherry, spicy moments (e.g. black pepper, a hint of nutmeg), along with peat and subtle maritime notes or mineral saltiness. Vanilla and oak from the casks are also present, providing depth and a solid foundation.
We recommend serving it best neat at room temperature, in a suitable whisky glass (Glencairn/tulip), to allow the aroma to fully develop. If the 50% feels too strong, a few drops of water can help open up the sweeter and fruitier notes. It also makes for a dramatic experience when tasting with friends or as a conclusion to the evening.
