Goslings

The Gosling family came to Bermuda by accident. In 1806, James Gosling sailed for America with goods for sale worth £ 10,000. The sea was so peaceful that after the ninety-first day of the voyage, the ship was forced to dock in the port of St. George, all the way to the north of the island. In December, Gosling founded the Royal Promenade in St. George shop. In 1824, he returned to England and set up a shop on Front Street with his brother Ambrose. In 1857, the company was named the Gosling Brothers, and a few years later the very first barrels of alcohol came from Bermuda. Originally, rum was sold directly from the barrel and customers often carried their own bottles. In an effort to reduce costs, they used champagne bottles, which they sealed with black wax. This is how the Black Seal was created. Gosling has become the largest exporter of any Bermuda product.
