Vodka in the starring role: 3 irresistible drinks you can mix at home
Vodka has long been one of the most popular spirits in the world. A large share of its popularity is due to mixed drinks, which are popular with even the most demanding tasters. Vodka is like a blank canvas on which you can apply the craziest or boldest colours when creating a cocktail. We don't dare to pick the three best mixed drinks, but we bring you 3 truly delicious recipes. Which one will taste the best to you?
Moscov Mule
In the 1940s, vodka was unknown in America and, more importantly, unwanted. It made deep wrinkles on John G.'s forehead. Martin, president of the company that bought the Smirnoff brand at the time. If a vodka company had been added to your business portfolio at that time, you would have been eager to change that. It all started one evening when John Martin stopped by the Cock N' Bull bar, where he was stocking unsold bottles of the spirit.
The bar's owner, Jack Morgan, was plagued by a similar problem - he couldn't sell ginger ale. In an effort to empty the warehouse, he came up with the idea of mixing the unwanted beer with unwanted vodka in copper cups that were made in the bankrupt factory of the bar owner's girlfriend. It didn't take long before every trendsetter in town was taking pictures with the drink in a copper cup. And thus was born the Moscow Mule, the mixed drink that made vodka famous across America.
What you need:
10 cl of ginger beer
5 cl vodka
0,6 cl lime juice
ice (cubes)
How to make it:
Squeeze the lime juice into the bottom of a glass (ideally a copper cup). Add 2-3 ice cubes, pour in the vodka, add the ginger beer, garnish the rim with a slice of lime and serve.
Cosmopolitan
The first version of the creation of Cosmopolitan is attributed to a bartender named Cheryl Cook in Miami Beach around 1970. She created this drink for women who wanted to look stylish while holding a martini glass. Cheryl was reportedly looking for a drink that was tasty and attractive, but not too strong. So she combined vodka, lime juice, triple sec and cranberry juice.
The second story is about a bartender named Toby Cecchini who perfected the recipe for the Cosmopolitan in New York in the 1980s . His version used Cointreau instead of regular triple sec and fresh lime juice. This version gained popularity especially in the stylish bars of New York.
The Cosmopolitan became one of the iconic cocktails of the 1990s, especially after it became the favourite drink of Carrie Bradshaw's character in Sex and the City. This elegant and refreshing drink has thus found a place among classic cocktails around the world.
What you need:
4 cl lemon vodka
1,5 cl Cointreau orange liqueur
1,5 cl fresh lime juice
3 cl cranberry juice
How to make it:
Pour all ingredients into a shaker with ice and shake, then strain into a pre-chilled stemmed glass.
Sex on the Beach
One of the most frequently cited stories about the origins of Sex on the Beach is that of a bartender named Ted Pizio. In 1987, there was a campaign in Florida to promote peach liqueur, and local bars were tasked with inventing new drinks with the ingredient. Ted reportedly combined peach liqueur, vodka, cranberry juice and orange juice. The drink became very popular among tourists, mainly due to its interesting name, which reflected the "fun at the beach" that was synonymous with Florida.
What you need:
4 cl of vodka
2 cl peach liqueur (e.g. Peach Schnapps)
4 cl cranberry juice
4 cl orange juice (sometimes pineapple juice is also used)
How to make it:
Pour the ingredients into a shaker with ice. Stir well and then strain the drink into a highball glass filled with ice. Garnish with an orange slice and a cherry.
