Monkey 47 Distiller’s Cut 2024 is a limited vintage edition of an exceptional gin from the heart of the Black Forest, which annually brings a unique “48th botanical” to the already known list of 47 plants. This year, the producer focused on capers from the island of Pantelleria, creating a gin with a distinctly earthy, green, and briny character. It is a creation for true connoisseurs and lovers of unconventional flavors, ideal especially for a dry Martini.
The production process is precise and exceptionally elaborate. The base consists of classic 47 hand-picked botanicals including citrus, juniper, cranberries, and herbs from the Schwarzwald region. Capers, added as this year's “Species Rara,” are harvested while still unopened, then dried and undergo double salting. This gives them a sweet-nutty and slightly spicy character.
After thorough rinsing, these capers are macerated together with the other botanical ingredients in a mixture of pure alcohol and spring water. The resulting mixture is distilled in small copper pot stills, then subjected to percolation, allowing delicate aromas to infuse into the distillate, and finally aged for about 100 days in clay vessels. This process ensures the harmonization of flavors and softening of the overall expression.
The aroma of the gin is distinctly juniper with fresh needles and a subtle citrus accent reminiscent of dried lemon peel and grapefruit. The capers add a pronounced salty and earthy tone, harmoniously complemented by notes of rosemary, black pepper, and subtle floral undertones.
The taste is dry, spicy, peppery and unmistakably “green,” with an earthy body and a slightly salty finish reminiscent of green olives and herbs like sage, mint, or juniper. The aftertaste reveals an elegant combination of marine freshness, nutty depth, and herbal spiciness, lingering moderately and inviting another sip.
Behind the Monkey 47 brand is the distillery Black Forest Distillers, whose story began with the original recipe of Montgomery Collins. They produce gin in the heart of the German Schwarzwald, emphasizing quality, craftsmanship, and innovative approaches.
The annual release of Distiller’s Cut is a celebration of creativity and a nod to the philosophy of “Wunderbar” – one botanical experiment in exclusive packaging each year. The 2024 edition also stands out visually – the elegant green label reflects the caper motif, and the entire packaging is made from FSC certified materials.
Bottles are filled with an alcohol content of 47% with a volume of 0.5 l.
