Rum matured in French and American oak barrels, then finally matured in ex-port barrels for the last few months. Port wine is usually stored in large oak barrels, which can contain about 500-550 liters of port wine.
After removing wine, the oak structure absorbs port wine and after removing while its secondary used for rum maturing, transfer and enhances some of the flavor elements from port wine into rum.
