Kilkerran 12 Year Old is a whisky produced at the Glengyle distillery, which reopened after more than 75 years (originally from 1872, restored in 2004). Distillation occurs only for about three months each year, and the entire output goes to single malt whisky.
The balance is achieved through aging in a combination of 70% ex-bourbon casks and 30% ex-sherry casks, which adds to its characteristic layered tones.
On the nose, there are prominent notes of marzipan, hazelnuts, honeyed cherries, dried fruits (dates, figs) and a subtle peat smoke. The palate is velvety, oily, with layers of citrus (lemon cake), vanilla, caramel, honey, complemented by a spicy finish – black pepper, saltiness, and a hint of peat.
It tastes best neat, at room temperature, to showcase the oiliness, sweetness, and salty undertone characteristic of Campbeltown. Some reviews recommend adding a few drops of water – it opens up the freshness of mandarin or honey.
Bottles are filled with an alcohol content of 46% and a volume of 0.7 l.
