No other distillery is allowed to use water from Lochan na Doire-uaine - a source of pure water from melting snow and rainwater high in the Drumochter Hills.

When the distillery was purpose-built in 1897, it was initially called Strathspey. Perhaps in an effort to distinguish its already distinctive whisky, the owners soon changed the name to Dalwhinnie after production began in 1898. In Gaelic, it means “meeting place,” referring to its location at the crossroads of ancient roads between two mountain ranges.
