Dalwhinnie

Between the Grampian and Monadhliath ridges in Inverness-Shire lies Scotland's tallest working distillery, Dalwhinnie. This remote place has been chosen for the richness of the local peat, a wonderfully clean source of water, and since it is in the heart of the Highlands, it is close to the Highland Railway Line, which allows for easy transport. The distillery was founded in the late 19th century and was called Strathspey.

After financial difficulties, three founding members, Alexander Mackenzie, John Grant and George Stellar, were forced to sell it to John Sommerville & Co and AP Blyth & Sons, who changed their name to Dalwhinnie and hired the famous Charles Doig of Speyside to design the refurbishment of parts of the distillery. Today, the distillery serves two purposes - in addition to malt whiskey, Dalwhinnie is a station of the Meteorological Institute and the manager must read the daily temperature and weather measurements.

The distillery changed hands several times during the 20th century, closed in 1934 after a fire in the same year, and reopened in 1938. Dalwhinnie previously had its own malt houses, although they were closed in 1968. A local pair of boilers provides a capacity of 2.2 million liters per year. Dalwhinnie is in the hands of the Diageo group, and this beverage industry has included this distillery in the Classic Malt line and has released the Distillery Edition, which has matured in Oloroso barrels, and a classic 15-year-old whiskey.
