In 1963, this spirit emerged from the stills of the Isle of Jura for the first time since the turn of the 20th century. This whisky distillery is the only one on the Isle of Jura and has undergone significant renovation, with nothing remaining of the old buildings except the walls. The buildings were designed by William Delmé-Evans, who later became the chief architect for the Tullibardine distillery. It was two local owners, Robin Fletcher and Tony Riley-Smith, who hired Delmé-Evans to renovate this distillery at their request to support the local economy.

Despite the proximity between Islay and Jura, the whiskies are quite different. Jura whiskies offer strength but none of the intense peaty smoke of their Islay cousins across the narrow channel that separates the two islands. The distillery on the Isle of Jura was founded in 1810 by Archibald Campbell and was named Small Isles Distillery. About eight years after the Licensing Act of 1823, William Abercombie obtained a license for this distillery and renamed it Isle of Jura.

The name comes from Old Norse and means "island of deer," most likely referring to the large local herds of deer that outnumber the human population. The most famous resident was George Orwell, who arrived on the island one clear cold day to write his work 1984. Several independent products have been released, and there is also a wide product range, within which four vintages were released in 2008, forming the Elements series.
