In 1963, this alcohol was ejected from the boilers of the island of Jura for the first time since the turn of the 20th century. This whiskey distillery is the only one on the island of Jura and has undergone a major refurbishment, leaving nothing but the walls of the old buildings. The buildings were designed by William Delmé-Evans, who was later the chief architect for the Tullibardine distillery. It was two local owners, Robin Fletcher and Tony Riley-Smith, who employed Delmé-Evans to renovate the distillery on request to support the local economy.

Despite the proximity between Islay and Jura, whiskeys are quite different. Jura whiskeys offer strength, but nothing from the intense peat smoke of their cousins eachleach from behind a narrow canal located between the two islands. The distillery on the Isle of Jura was founded in 1810 by Archibald Campbell and named it Small Isles Distillery. About eight years after the Licensing Act of 1823, William Abercombie obtained a license for this distillery and renamed it the Isle of Jura.

The name comes from ancient Norwegian and means "deer island", which is most likely a reference to large local herds of deer, which exceed the number of inhabitants. The most famous resident was George Orwell, who came to the island on a clear cold day to write his work in 1984. Several independent products have been released and there is a wide product range, in which four volumes were released in 2008, forming a series Elements.
