Laphroaig PX Cask
Pronunciation: { La-Froyg }Laphroaig PX Cask was the first to enjoy maturation in ex-Sherry Pedro Ximenéz casks, often referred to as PX casks. Pedro Ximenez sherry is renowned for its natural sweetness, derived from the dried Pedro Ximenez grapes.
All three types of cask, from American oak to quarter cask to Pedro Ximenéz sherry casks, used for maturation, give this whisky something of its characteristics.
The final maturation in PX Cask casks after PX Cask gives a rich, sweeter aroma with a full body that perfectly complements the pungent smell of peat smoke from Laphroaig, creating a product that needs to be appreciated over time to be fully discovered.
From the bottle you get a pleasant sherry aroma of sweet sultanas and raisins with a hint of liquorice and just a subtly pungent peat smell. A drop of water brings marzipan and almond aromas, and opposite stands a creamy nutty aroma and lots of ripe fruit, but again that sharp, albeit subtle, peat smoke smell.
Without adding water to the glass, the mouth is flooded with a mighty explosion of peat with a huge amount of oaky flavour, tempered only by the sweeter heavy sherry flavour. Adding a drop of water will subtly dampen the massive peat smell.
The bottles are bottled at 48 % alcohol with a volume of 1 l and are supplied in gift tubes.
