Primitivo

Primitivo are intense red wines, that are made from the Primitivo grape variety, also known as Zinfandel in the United States. This variety has its roots in the south of Italy in the region of Apulia (Puglia), where it has been cultivated for several centuries. The berries of this vine are dark blue.

Origin
If you are hesitating between Italy and the USA, it doesn't matter either. The Primitivo variety comes from Croatia, where it is known as Crljenak Kaštelanski. It has been cultivated there since the 15th century. It reached Italy in the 18th century and was named Primitivo. Primi - the first, probably because of its early ripening. In the 19th century, it reached the USA, where it is known as Zinfandel. Genetic research has confirmed that Primitivo, Zinfandel and Crljenak Kaštelanski are identical. This discovery showed how winemaking and grape cultivation spread across Europe and later to the Americas, and how local conditions and winemaking techniques provided diversity in the styles and tastes of this variety. Characteristics of Primitivo wines
Primitivo wines have a dark, often opaque ruby ​​to purple color. Typical aromas for this variety are black fruits such as blackberries, cherries and plums, often accompanied by notes of spice, chocolate, vanilla and tobacco. The wines are full and juicy. with a robust and warm character. They often have a higher alcohol content, which can reach up to 15%. The taste is usually rich in dark fruit with fine tannins and a long finish. Although these wines are pleasant even when young, some higher quality specimens can age for 5-10 years.
